The current Australian Standard AS1926.1-2012 (the standard) is in place as the standard in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and the ACT.

Owners are also required to have their safety barriers inspected and to lodge a certificate of barrier compliance with council. If a safety barrier is not compliant, it is the owner’s responsibility to make the barrier compliant.

When installing a new pool or spa, you should engage a builder registered in an appropriate category or class to do the work.

All swimming pools and spas capable of containing water to a depth greater than 30cm must have a compliant safety barrier to restrict access by young children (under the age of five).

Pool and spa owners are also required to obtain and lodge compliance certificates for their safety barriers. A new compliance certificate must be lodged every four years

In the year to 30 June 2024, 15 children under the age of five died by drowning in Australia. Half of these incidents occurred in private swimming pools.
